Make Old Furniture Look Like New
Looking for the perfect piece
Refurbishing old furniture is a great way to get the feel you are looking for in your home. We are all looking for cute furniture for our home. Sometimes you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, or if you do it’s too expensive.
If you have a dresser or any other piece of furniture, in storage or in your house that you can’t stand looking at anymore, don’t get rid of it. You can easily refurbish your old furniture and make it look exactly the way you want.
When I went looking for a dresser, I found one on the Facebook Market for only $80! It wasn’t my style kind of outdated, but I wanted a cute TV stand that would look good in my new room. I knew what I had in mind and and this piece was perfect.
I got it home and put it in my garage. Find an area you don’t mind getting a little dirty and well ventilated.
Getting The Project Started
Remove the knobs and drawers before you start panting.
I flipped the dresser onto the top, added the new feet I got and started painting. I painted the dresser with this really pretty blue color by Valspar- Gotham Grey. I was able to paint the whole dresser (besides the top) with the sample paint for only $4!
Make sure the paint you’re using has soft bristles so it doesn’t leave streaks.
After I painted I let it dry, and flipped the dresser back over. I sanded the top of the dresser because I wanted to stain it a dark color. If you don’t have a sander you can try asking a neighbor or you can rent one from Home Depot. I hand sanded around the molding on the dresser.
When you’re finished sanding make sure to clean the top off good, and now you can stain. I used the Gel Stain-coffee color. I wiped it on with a lint-free rag. Use as many coats as you need to get to the shade you like.
Once the stain is dry I put on one coat of clear polyurethane. If you want the the furniture to be super waterproof you can add more coats.
I let that dry and I did a quick glance over and touched up any spots that I might have missed.
Finally, I added the knobs (my favorite part). I wanted to give the dresser a little bit more personality and charm, so I found these super cute geode knobs, that gave the perfect touch.
Another way to give it a new look is by replacing or adding feet to the bottom. Not a lot of people think about that part but it can make a huge difference. I found these dresser feet which I love because it gave the dresser a whole new look.
And there you have it. A whole new dresser, without spending an arm and a leg! The total project = $180!
If you love refurbishing furniture, you can easily go and resell this for way more than what you spent on it. A fun and easy way to make some extra money.
What do you think of the new look? If you have furniture that you have refurbished we would love to see it! Please feel free to share this with your friends! 🙂
